The official made the remarks in a ceremony to launch the third phase of the National Information Network on the sidelines of the 23rd Iran International Exhibition of Electronics, Computers and E-Commerce (Elecomp 2017) in Tehran.
The new regulation is breaking news to some of the largest internet service providers, including major mobile operators with millions of data customers.
“Consumers will now purchase access to an internet connection rather than internet packages with usage limits,” Vaezi said.
In other words, all internet services will become unlimited, but the caveat will be the bandwidth, i.e. the download speed. The bandwidths will range from 512 kbps – optimal for regular users – to as much as 16 mbps for heavy users.
The official also discussed the National Information Network which is seen as an effort to organize and regulate the flow of data on the internet within a nationwide infrastructure.
“Content creation is one of our concerns nowadays and the network is an effort to systemize and handle the issue,” Vaezi added.
The network is designed to be an alternative, independent and countrywide network; the content of which will compatible with Islamic values. Officials say the network would facilitate access to indigenously produced content, decrease costs and improve the quality of services.
Officials said last year that works on the network’s architecture and infrastructure had been completed.
